Introduction of Dental implants has brought about a revolution in the field of dentistry. Dental implants have opened new doors for patients who otherwise had very limited treatment options.
What is a Dental Implant?
Dental Implants is a titanium screw which is inserted in the bone to replace a single tooth or several teeth in the mouth without disturbing the adjacent teeth.
How is it superior to a conventional Crown/Bridge?
Dental Implant is inserted directly into the jaw bones making it part of the body and thereby replicating the lost tooth. Once the Implant completely settles in the jaw bone, a crown is placed on top of it. The whole process is carried out independently without compromising the adjacent teeth as in the case of a bridge. Also this is the only treatment option available for replacing missing teeth at the end of the arches when no supporting tooth is present.
How many teeth can be replaced by an Implant?
Implants can replace single or multiple teeth. In case of multiple teeth two or more Implants can be placed side by side and a bridge can be placed on top of it. Hence the number of implants being placed is usually less than the number of teeth being replaced.
Can everybody have implants?
Good and healthy jaw bones are must for a successful Implant treatment.
In patients with hypertension, diabetes, and other Cardiac disorders the rate of success is almost similar to that of a healthy individuals provided the diseases are controlled prior to Implant placement. However special screening is usually required for these patients.
Certain medical conditions significantly reduce the chance of success. Smokers and patients with very bad oral hygiene have a poor rate of success with implants; they should either stop smoking altogether or choose a different option for restoring their dentition
How long does it usually take?
The implants are placed tightly inside a hole which is drilled into the bone. It usually requires 2-3 months for the bone to grow around the implant (process called ossteointegration) and holds it in place till the final crown is placed. During this time temporary crowns can be placed so that the patient can function normally till it is replaced by a permanent crown.
Can implants help if there are no teeth at all?
Implants may be used not only to replace a single tooth but also provide support for a denture. In patients who have lost all teeth and may or may not be wearing dentures, the ridge of the bone is lost usually in the lower jaw. This makes the lower denture loose and not fit for functioning. In such cases placement of a few implants in the lower jaw will provide sufficient support and stability for a denture, thus improving the functioning of the denture.
How much does a dental Implant costs?
Various Implant options are available at Simplismile such as Nobel Biocare, ANKYLOS, XIVE, UNITI etc. The cost of treatment depends on the system being used. In certain cases the underlying bone support is compromised so addition procedures like bone grafting and sinus lifts have to be carried out before Implant placement. Generally a single tooth implant costs anywhere between INR 30-40 thousand.
What is the success rate?
Dental implants have a success rate of 90-95%.
